Alameda County is moving on up like The Jeffersons. As of today Alameda County has officially moved into the red-tier of the state of California's Department of Public Health's blueprint for a safer economy. One of the "perks" of being a red-tier county for 2 weeks in a row is the ability to open schools for in-person learning.

Although this is welcome news for frazzled parents and students who may be eager to return to a school, the teacher's unions are not yet 100% on board with the new directive. The spokesperson for the Oakland Education Association Chaz Garcia explained, "We have safety criteria that still needs to be negotiated and agreed upon before return to doing any in-person learning.” Baby steps!

In addition to in-person learning the new tier status will allo

  • Personal care services – hair and nail salons, barbershops (open with modifications)
  • Museums, zoos and aquariums (max 25% capacity)
  • Places of worship (max 25% capacity or 100 people, whichever is fewer)
  • Movie theaters indoors (max 25% capacity or 100 people, whichever is fewer)
  • Gyms and fitness centers indoors (max 10% capacity)
  • Restaurants indoors (max 25% capacity or 100 people, whichever is fewer)
  • All retail indoors (max 50% capacity)
  • Shopping centers, swap meets indoors (max 50% capacity, closed common areas)
