Flashback: Michael Jackson's Halftime Performance

posted by Martha Quinn -

One of the greatest BIG GAME moments ever was definitely a touch-down, but this one was during half-time.

In 1993 the King of Pop scored the championship of LEGEND before his performance music even started.  To set the scene it's, 1993 the Buffalo Bills are on their way to being trounced by The Dallas Cowboys. Word is Michael floated the idea of the game being called Thriller Bowl, which was rejected but that didn't matter because Michael was still the GREATEST OF ALL TIME on that day!

Michael begins his half-time extravaganza by surprising the crowd from up on top of the big video screen at the side of the Rose Bowl stadium. Seconds later, amidst a blast of smoke, he launches up from the middle of the stage in the field. The approximately 22,000 in the Rose Bowl go completely bonkers as Michael holds his pose, looking like statue over his right shoulder. He had told his band not to play until he flicked his wrist.

Michael stands stock still, looking over his right shoulder for 10 seconds, 20 seconds, 30 seconds, 40 seconds…holding for OVER A MINUTE! Then, he jolts his head to left and stands, again stock still, yeah I got the crowd, drink this in world, for another 30 full seconds! Rolling Stone points out that was equal to nearly $15 million in advertising time!

Watch and see why Michael was undeniably the man. He was the King Of Pop. I don’t care if he did give himself that name he deserved it. It was the first time ratings went UP during half-time of the big game. It turned out to be the Thriller Bowl after all!
