For today’s Wellness Shot I looked at the ruling where a judge in Los Angeles decided coffee shops in California have to now post cancer warning signs.
Full disclosure I am a coffee nut so completely biased, but here’s what I’ve figured out!
This is all about a chemical used in coffee roasting, called acrylamide. It has been shown, in animal tests to be toxic even cause cancer, when the animals being tested are exposed to large amounts so it’s on California’s carcinogenic list. But the thing is we have no dependable studies about people, plus the amount in coffee is tiny, and no reliable studies have shown it causes humans any harm.
However they way our law works in California, the people bringing the lawsuit don’t have to prove it does cause any kind of cancer, it’s up to the people being sued (Starbucks and more in the coffee industry) to prove beyond a shadow of a doubt this trace chemical doesn’t cause any harm whatsoever.
So, the judge in LA, in spite of decades of research showing coffee may reduce the risk of illnesses ranging from Type 2 diabetes to heart disease and Alzheimer’s, said the coffee defendants didn’t prove there are absolutely no ill effects of acrylamide, so now coffee shops have to post a cancer warning, here in California.
Starbucks and the other defendents have until april 10th to appeal this decision.
Here’s links to all the articles I read, believe me when my coffee is getting shade thrown at it I spring into action! What do you think? Will this warning steer you away from your cup of Joe??
