Elvis Costello Was Banned From 'Saturday Night Live'..Here's Why
This week marks the 41st anniversary of the night Elvis Costello got himself banned from Saturday Night Live. It was 1977 and Costello & The Attractions were supposed to play a song called "Less Than Zero", but after just a few bars the band stopped and Elvis said, "sorry ladies and gentlemen, there's no reason to be doing this song here." They then launched into "Radio Radio", which would eventually become a huge hit, but at the time hadn't even been recorded yet. Costello's surprise set change ticked off producer Lorne Michaels so much he stood there flipping the bird at the band the whole time. Costello ended up getting banned from SNL until 1989.
