Wellness Shot: Why You Must Always Wash Your Avocados

Love to put avocados on your sandwich? Make guacamole? Important info! Even though you peel it, wash your avocado first!

The FDA did a sweeping check and found almost 18% of avocado skins tested, tested positive for listeria!

Listeria is a bacteria that can cause listeriosis and make you really sick. Symptoms include muscle aches, fever, nausea, and diarrhea. The FDA recommends washing all produce under running water and scrubbing firm produce with a clean produce brush before cutting or peeling it.

This is especially important if you’re pregnant or have a weakened immune system.

In my house, I wash anything I cut-cantaloupe, watermelon, mangos, papayas even oranges. When your knife goes from the skin into the fruit or vegetable it’s bringing along with it anything that was on the surface, transferring contaminants from the knife to fruit.
