Thanks Kate in Stockton, CA for letting me know July is National Watermelon Month! Even though I just have a few days left to celebrate, I’m gonna tear the roof off, watermelon is my all-time favorite fruit, I can easily polish off an entire watermelon in a day. Which is a good thing, there’s as many benefits to watermelon as there are seeds to spit out!
First of all watermelon is in the zucchini family, but unlike zucchini watermelon is red due to the presence of the lycopene, an antioxidant which may help lower cholesterol, and prevent certain types of cancers.
Watermelon is also the richest known dietary source of citrulline which helps keep your arteries soft and expandable, allowing for healthy blood flow, which helps lower blood pressure, not to mention 'healthy blood flow' is a bonus in ahem, lots of areas of our lives.
When choosing a watermelon make sure you select one that’s heavy for it’s size and has a creamy yellow spot.
